Giants in the Land |
Chapter 6 |
| 1 When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, |
1 When the human race began to increase, with more and more daughters being born, |
1 WHEN MEN began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, |
| 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. |
2 the sons of God noticed that the daughters of men were beautiful. They looked them over and picked out wives for themselves. |
2 The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and they took wives of all they desired and chose. |
| 3 Then the Lord said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years." |
3 Then God said, "I'm not going to breathe life into men and women endlessly. Eventually they're going to die; from now on they can expect a life span of 120 years." |
3 Then the Lord said, My Spirit shall not forever dwell and strive with man, for he also is flesh; but his days shall yet be 120 years. |
| 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. |
4 This was back in the days (and also later) when there were giants in the land. The giants came from the union of the sons of God and the daughters of men. These were the mighty men of ancient lore, the famous ones. |
4 There were giants on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. |

Noah and His Sons |
|
| 5 The Lord saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. |
5 God saw that human evil was out of control. People thought evil, imagined evil—evil, evil, evil from morning to night. |
5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention of all human thinking was only evil continually. |
| 6 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. |
6 God was sorry that he had made the human race in the first place; it broke his heart. |
6 And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved at heart. |
| 7 So the Lord said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them." |
7 God said, "I'll get rid of my ruined creation, make a clean sweep: people, animals, snakes and bugs, birds—the works. I'm sorry I made them." |
7 So the Lord said, I will destroy, blot out, and wipe away mankind, whom I have created from the face of the ground—not only man, [but] the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air—for it grieves Me and makes Me regretful that I have made them. |
| 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. |
8 But Noah was different. God liked what he saw in Noah. |
8 But Noah found grace (favor) in the eyes of the Lord. |
| 9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. |
9 This is the story of Noah: Noah was a good man, a man of integrity in his community. Noah walked with God. |
9 This is the history of the generations of Noah. Noah was a just and righteous man, blameless in his [evil] generation; Noah walked [in habitual fellowship] with God. |
| 10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. |
10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. |
10 And Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. |
| 11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. |
11 As far as God was concerned, the Earth had become a sewer; there was violence everywhere. |
11 The earth was depraved and putrid in God’s sight, and the land was filled with violence (desecration, infringement, outrage, assault, and lust for power). |
| 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. |
12 God took one look and saw how bad it was, everyone corrupt and corrupting—life itself corrupt to the core. |
12 And God looked upon the world and saw how degenerate, debased, and vicious it was, for all humanity had corrupted their way upon the earth and lost their true direction. |
| 13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. |
13 God said to Noah, "It's all over. It's the end of the human race. The violence is everywhere; I'm making a clean sweep. |
13 God said to Noah, I intend to make an end of all flesh, for through men the land is filled with violence; and behold, I will destroy them and the land. |
| 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. |
14 "Build yourself a ship from teakwood. Make rooms in it. Coat it with pitch inside and out. |
14 Make yourself an ark of gopher or cypress wood; make in it rooms (stalls, pens, coops, nests, cages, and compartments) and cover it inside and out with pitch (bitumen). |
| 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. |
15 Make it 450 feet long, seventy-five feet wide, and forty-five feet high. |
15 And this is the way you are to make it: the length of the ark shall be 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits [that is, 450 ft. x 75 ft. x 45 ft.]. |
| 16 Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. |
16 Build a roof for it and put in a window eighteen inches from the top; put in a door on the side of the ship; and make three decks, lower, middle, and upper. |
16 You shall make a roof or window [a place for light] for the ark and finish it to a cubit [at least 18 inches] above—and the oor of the ark you shall put in the side of it; and you shall make it with lower, second, and third stories. |
| 17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. |
17 "I'm going to bring a flood on the Earth that will destroy everything alive under Heaven. Total destruction. |
17 For behold, I, even I, will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy and make putrid all flesh under the heavens in which are the breath and spirit of life; everything that is on the land shall die. |
| 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. |
18 "But I'm going to establish a covenant with you: You'll board the ship, and your sons, your wife and your sons' wives will come on board with you. |
18 But I will establish My covenant (promise, pledge) with you, and you shall come into the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. |
| 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. |
19 You are also to take two of each living creature, a male and a female, on board the ship, to preserve their lives with you: |
19 And of every living thing of all flesh [found on land], you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. |
| 20 Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. |
20 two of every species of bird, mammal, and reptile—two of everything so as to preserve their lives along with yours. |
20 Of fowls and birds according to their kinds, of beasts according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind—two of every sort shall come in with you, that they may be kept alive. |
| 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them." |
21 Also get all the food you'll need and store it up for you and them." |
21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and you shall collect and store it up, and it shall serve as food for you and for them. |
| 22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him. |
22 Noah did everything God commanded him to do. |
22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him. |
